"The Dickens Encyclopaedia" is a comprehensive and indispensable reference guide for readers and scholars of one of the most celebrated novelists in the English language. Compiled by Arthur L. Hayward, this extensive work provides an alphabetical dictionary of every character and place mentioned across the vast fictional landscape of Charles Dickens. From the iconic streets of Victorian London to the most obscure minor figures, the volume meticulously catalogs the people and settings that define the Dickensian world.
Beyond its function as a character directory, the book includes detailed explanatory notes on obscure allusions, Victorian slang, and period-specific phrases that may puzzle modern readers. This scholarly yet accessible tool illuminates the historical context and intricate details of the author's prose, making it an essential companion for anyone navigating his novels, stories, and sketches. By offering clarity on the cultural and geographical references embedded in the texts, "The Dickens Encyclopaedia" preserves the richness of the author's creative legacy and serves as a definitive resource for literary research and appreciation.
