From the Author
This book has been a long time coming but I think you will find it well worth the wait. I have tried to answer every question on birdfeeding that anyone has ever asked me through the paper, on the radio and during speaking engagements. My good friend and colleague, Hairy Houdini, has been nice enough to write the forward for the book even knowing much of it is a tell-all book about him and his squirrelly friends. Chapter One covers the basics of birdfeeding and lays the groundwork for successfully and responsibly feeding birds. "Think of Your Birdfeeder as a Fine Restaurant." Chapter Two gives pointers on fine-tuning a birdfeeding program and suggestions on how to attract more species with landscaping and food choices. "Nuts to Your Birds" and "A Bird Looks Windward, So His Feathers Stay Inward." Chapter Three discusses birdfeeding’s little aggravations, everything from dealing with bird droppings to chasing the neighbor’s cat away from the feeder. "Due-Due Economics" and "Shoot the Neighbor, Not the Cat!" Chapter Four is my favorite. It deals with squirrelly neighbors and covers everything you ever need to know about negotiating with them. "Squirrellyosis" and "Don’t Make a Big Hairy Deal Out of Your Squirrels." Chapter Five gives all the information necessary to construct a nesting box that birds will use repeatedly. "Keep the Ceiling Waterproof and the Floor Leaky: Construction, Mounting, and Problem-Solving Tips." Chapter Six is the connection chapter. Here I try to show the linkage of the magic perched outside the window to the bigger environmental issues that face us all today. "Are the Earth’s Natural Resources Infinite or Exhaustible?" Chapter Seven is a collection of recipes, home brews, methods, and wing tips. It explains how to bake for your birds and become a fat-head suet chef. "Let Them Eat Cake" and Too Many Cooks Spoil the Suet." Each chapter ends with a review to recap and reinforce, some "Dear Dick E. Bird" questions and answers, plus a short quiz of "Tongue-in-Beak Tidbits" that must be answered before you can move on to the next chapter. The book also contains 10 years’ worth of the best of The Dick E. Bird News with "Bird Droppings," Dick E. Bird poems and quotes and a glossary of Dick E. Bird words. This is a fun field guide to enjoying the hobby of backyard birdfeeding stuffed with good, solid information that has been tried and time-tested not only by me but by thousands of Dick E. Bird News readers during the last decade.
