(BATTLE OF ATLANTA DIARY). Diary. 17pg. 5 x 8. September 29, 1864 to October 31, 1864. Atlanta. A diary of an officer from Battery M of the First New York Light Artillery when the Union army was operating around Atlanta. By this point, the city of Atlanta had been under Union occupation since September 2nd, the disastrous and deadly fires had been put out, and all civilians had been forced out. Major General William Tecumseh Sherman used the next two months to refurnish his army while also sending most of his corps after General John Hoods Confederate army marching towards Nashville. The diary states: Atlanta Ga Sept 29th 1864 Capt J. D. Woodbury resignation accepted have to assume command of Battery today - Weather too bad to paint. Received muster out roll in which 1st Lt. Reed order to make estimate for clothing, camp and garrison equipage, also Q. M. stores. Nearly finished inventory of battery. Let Lieut Hubbard have one of private blankets. Sept 30th Made in inventory of Q. M. stores. Sent in estimates for camp and garrison equipage and Q. M. stores. Turned over to Capt Joseph A. Schoeninger 7 seven pair cavalry boots and got his receipts dated Oct 1st 64. Inspected the company and found 77 Knapsacks 97 Canteens 113 Haversacks. Oct 1 1864 Exchanged mine mules with Capt Bundy. Capt Woodbury and I disagree on inventory - I refuse to receipt for surplus and unserviceable stores. He purposed to make his quarterly returns on certified invoices. I call for a board of survey. Oct 2nd Received orders to send two waggons and the mules all except six out to graze with corps train that is going out tomorrow morning. Also all of the extra horses. Orders to commence painting battery and push along with all possible force. Received order of detail of officers to constitute a board of survey to take an inventory of all public property in Battery M and report condition of same. Painted one section this afternoon. Oct 3rd 1864 Board of survey met today took an inventory of all of the ordnance stores. Painted the remaining sections. Drew clothing:11 Army jackets14 pants cavalry10 blouses lined28 shirts gray18 drawers12 stockings13 caps25 boots16 canteens21 KnapsacksOct 4th 1864 Board of survey met again and finished their inventory of property pertaining to the battery. Received orders telling today to send all of the horses and men enough to take care of them to report to Capt Schoeninger in charge of a command of officers and every day at seven o'clock AM until further orders. Oct 5th Received orders at 10 o'clock last night to send all of the horses of the battery to Capt Bundy this morning which I did promptly. Oct 6th 64 Rained. Sent the animals out to graze two horses gave out on the way and had to be abandoned. Lt. Bimley was taken to sit on Board of Survey met today and received corrected their papers. Made a picket rope out of wire. Oct 7th 1864 Lieut Carlisle came today and condemned camp and garrison [equipage] Oct 8th Through the carelessness of the guards one horse strayed from the picket rope. Clark and Robert Day were the guards. The horse was found before noon. Cold Day. Four horses today abandoned on the road. Oct 9th 1864 Board of survey met today and had final action and sent their papers up to Maj. Reynolds. Horses went out to graze and in charge of Sergeant Howard. Three horses abandoned. Oct 10th 1864 Sent the horses out to graze in charge of Lieut Goomley he had to abandon two. Oct 11th 1864 Sent the horses out to graze in charge of Sergt Howard. One glandered horse abandoned. Sent out two waggons with a foraging party they have not yet returned. Oct 12th Sent the horses out to graze in charge of Lieut Gumley. Two were abandoned on the road. Received inspection report of ordinance. Oct 13th Seven men mustered out time of service having expired. No horses lost today. Turned over unserviceable ordinance stores to Capt Hagan. 8 revolvers, 6 sabres. Oct 15th Finished monthly returns of QM stores and C&G equipage. One ho.

The cancellation period will expire after 14 days from the day on which you acquire, or a third party other than the carrier and indicated by you acquires, physical possession of the the last good or the last lot or piece.
To exercise the right to cancel, you must inform us, Stuart Lutz Historic Documents, Inc., 784 Morris Turnpike, PMB #161, 07078-2698, Short Hills, New Jersey, U.S.A., +1 8774289362, of your decision to cancel this contract by a clear statement (e.g. a letter sent by post, fax or e-mail). You may use the attached model cancellation form, but it is not obligatory. You can also electronically fill in and submit a clear statement on our website, under "My Purchases" in "My Account". If you use this option, we will communicate to you an acknowledgement of receipt of such a cancellation on a durable medium (e.g. by e-mail) without delay.
To meet the cancellation deadline, it is sufficient for you to send your communication concerning your exercise of the right to cancel before the cancellation period has expired.
Effects of cancellation
If you cancel this contract, we will reimburse to you all payments received from you, including the costs of delivery (except for the supplementary costs arising if you chose a type of delivery other than the least expensive type of standard delivery offered by us).
We may make a deduction from the reimbursement for loss in value of any goods supplied, if the loss is the result of unnecessary handling by you.
We will make the reimbursement without undue delay, and not later than 14 days after the day on which we are informed about your decision to cancel with contract and the materials are returned to us in the same condition in which they were mailed by us.
We will make the reimbursement using the same means of payment as you used for the initial transaction, unless you have expressly agreed otherwise; in any event, you will not incur any fees as a result of such reimbursement.
We will withhold reimbursement until we have received the goods back.
You shall send back the goods or hand them over to us or Stuart Lutz Historic Documents, Inc., 784 Morris Turnpike, PMB #161, 07078-2698, Short Hills, New Jersey, U.S.A., +1 8774289362, without undue delay and in any event not later than 7 days from the day on which you communicate your cancellation from this contract to us. The deadline is met if you send back the goods before the period of 7 days has expired. You will have to bear the direct cost of returning the goods. You are only liable for any diminished value of the goods resulting from the handling other than what is necessary to establish the nature, characteristics and functioning of the goods.
