Print on Demand. This book takes the reader into the wilds of Maine, immersing them in the daily life of a trapper in the late 19th century. Through the author's detailed diary entries, we experience the harsh realities of life in the remote woods, where survival hinges on hunting, trapping, and the ability to read the signs of nature. The entries chronicle the author's relentless pursuit of furs, highlighting his intimate knowledge of the local wildlife, including beaver, mink, deer, caribou, and even bears. The author's meticulous descriptions of his hunting techniques and the challenges he faces, from harsh weather conditions to the constant threat of wild animals, create a vivid picture of the dangers and rewards of trapping life. Beyond the practicalities of trapping, the diary reveals the author's profound connection to the natural world. He observes changes in the seasons, tracks the movements of animals, and reflects on the delicate balance between man and nature. This book offers a unique window into a way of life that has largely disappeared, providing a fascinating look at the history of hunting and trapping in America. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

Product Description
I came to Rump Pond to-day with my traps and some supplies. I poled a boat up the river over Rump Falls. I found it good practice for poling as well as a good test for the setting pole. It began with coarse gravel, broad and shallow, but finally it became more narrow, and big rocks with white water and ledges. I had to get out and lift the boat over just one place. I was two hours rowing up, from the time I laid down my paddle and took my setting-pole. I took both boats up to Billings' Ponds, dragged one over and put it in the pond to use on the beaver. I found their house, it is a big one, with lots of wood put in around it, mostly maple, round wood and alders. I set one trap kind of easy. I didn't have much time to spare and no stonesto fasten on the traps, so I left them till to-morrow. Got three rats last night and the nose of another. The sky has clouded over to-day, - been all day about it, - and I hear it raining outside now, so I guess it will rain enough to morrow to wash out the tracks I make setting my traps.
