Diary of a Bipolar Friend – The True Story of a TSO, Two Hospitalizations, and a Life Trying to Stay on Its Feet
What do you do when your mind decides to run at a thousand miles an hour while the world only asks you to sit still and be quiet?
Diary of a Bipolar Friend is the first-person account of a man with type I bipolar disorder who finally chooses to tell his story without filters to the people around him – as if he were talking directly to a friend.
From the first manic episode to the TSO with straps on the bed, from the corridors of the psychiatric ward to nights of chaotic living, excesses, alcohol and out-of-control decisions, all the way to the depression that drains even the strength to get out of bed: this book is a journey into mental illness lived from the inside, with no sugar-coating – and no shame.
Chapter after chapter we follow the protagonist as he tries to rebuild himself:
university to go back to after the crash;
the first “normal” job, where everyone pretends everything is fine;
his love story with Elena, between pills on the bedside table, fears, and attempts to be “just a couple” and not patient + nurse;
the delicate balance between lithium, sleep, relationships, guilt, and a real desire to live.
When the second big wave hits – a new manic phase in adulthood, with a permanent job, a serious relationship and a life that looks “sorted” on the surface – everything is at risk of shattering again: work, relationship, dignity. But this time something changes: it’s no longer just the family signing a TSO, he is the one who chooses a voluntary admission, before destroying everything for the second time.
This is not a psychiatry textbook.
It is not a self-help manual.
It is the emotional diary of someone who has:
hated and loved lithium as both a prison and a seat belt;
seen psychiatric wards from the inside, not in a TV series;
lost people who “couldn’t handle being by his side anymore”;
had to learn that he is not just “the diagnosis”, but not “just a personality” either.
In the final chapter, the protagonist speaks directly to those who are living through the same storm and to those who love someone with bipolar disorder from the outside: he talks about TSO, shame, secretly skipped meds, nights when you don’t want to die but no longer know how to live, relationships that shake with every crisis, and the small, concrete things that, day after day, still keep you here.
This book is for you if:
you have bipolar disorder (diagnosed or suspected) and at least once have felt like a “burden”, a “monster” or a “problem”;
you love a bipolar friend, partner, child or parent and don’t know how to step into their world without losing yourself;
you work in mental health and want to understand what is really happening in the mind of the person in front of you, beyond the clinical chart;
you believe some stories need to be listened to all the way through, even when they hurt.
Important Warning
This book contains references to TSO, psychiatric hospitalizations, thoughts of death, self-harm and moments of intense emotional suffering.
It does not in any way replace medical or psychological treatment.
If you recognise yourself in some parts and you are struggling, seeking help – from a professional, a health service, an emergency number or someone you trust – is not weakness: it is an act of courage.
