Item description from seller

Original extensively tooled red leather, excellent condition. AEG. 239, [3] pp., lacking one leaf (pp. xi-xii, the last page of the publisher's preface) 31 hand-colored maps and engraved decorative title page, as issued. This is one volume only of a two volume atlas, containing maps of the world not of the Americas. The Diamond Atlas was almost identical in style to a New Orleans publication, The World in Miniature, also published in 1857. This work has a copyright date of 1856, while the copyright date in the New Orleans publication was 1857. The ornate bindings are extremely similar, with small differences in ornamentation.
