A pivotal work of Marxist thought, Henri Lefebvre's 'Dialectical Materialism' was penned just before World War II and the French Resistance movement. This influential text aimed to broaden the scope of Marxist theory, reflecting Lefebvre's dynamic vision of Marxism as a movement of theory and practice, in contrast to the rigid interpretations of the French Communist Party (PCF). Notably, this book serves as an implicit counter-argument to Joseph Stalin's 'Dialectical and Historical Materialism', asserting that the Stalinist understanding of the concept was dogmatic and oversimplified. It showcases the tension-fraught relationship between Lefebvre and the PCF, highlighting his independent and critical approach to Marxist philosophy. This is a later printing, published in 1970 by Cape, presented as a paperback in good condition. This edition is further enhanced by a new introduction from Stefan Kipfer, which explores the book’s contemporary relevance and its ramifications in the context of the expanding urban landscape of the twentieth-century Western world.…
