Diagnostic sonography demands more than recognizing images. It requires knowing what to scan, how to optimize the study, what to measure, which pitfalls can mislead you, and when a finding requires escalation.
Diagnostic Sonography Handbook is a practical, protocol-driven clinical reference that connects anatomy, scanning technique, image optimization, pathology, documentation, and clinical judgment. Designed for sonographers, students, credentialing candidates, and clinicians training in diagnostic ultrasound, it makes complex material easier to study, review, and apply.
Inside, you’ll explore:
Ultrasound physics, instrumentation, Doppler, artifacts, safety, ALARA, patient care, and professional practice
• Abdominal and pelvic imaging, including hepatobiliary, renal, gastrointestinal, retroperitoneal, and emergent examinations
• Carotid, peripheral arterial, venous, dialysis access, and Doppler protocols
• Cardiac and fetal echocardiography, hemodynamics, chamber assessment, valve disease, and congenital abnormalities
• First-, second-, and third-trimester obstetric imaging, fetal biometry, growth, placenta, Doppler, and fetal well-being
• Neonatal and pediatric abdominal, urinary, cranial, spinal, and hip sonography
• Breast, thyroid, scrotal, musculoskeletal, interventional, contrast-enhanced, and transplant ultrasound
Each chapter emphasizes practical scanning decisions, protocol completeness, common pitfalls, reporting limitations, key points, and registry-style questions with explanations.
Whether preparing for credentialing exams or strengthening everyday clinical practice, this handbook provides a clear framework for more complete, thoughtful, and defensible ultrasound examinations.
The manuscript specifically uses a protocol-first anatomy-to-pathology structure and closes chapters with practical key points and registry-style review questions. Its later chapters also cover advanced obstetric assessment, fetal growth, Doppler, placental evaluation, high-risk pregnancy, and congenital anomalies.
