From the Author
Gardening and writing have always worked together for me. Designing and planting a new space has been my guaranteed cure for writers' block -- a hands-on physical creativity that seems to complement the mental creativity of writing fiction. Thus, Rachel O'Connor, daughter of an orchard-farming family and a professional landscaper, seemed like a natural to me. I had a wonderful time creating this series. I set it in the scenic Columbia River Gorge, a favorite haunt of mine. Rachel lives in Blossom, a fictional town near the real town of Hood River. It was an easy choice to bring Rachel to life there. Hood River is in the middle of a sometimes difficult transition from a quiet little agricultural town to a growing vacation and recreation area. The tourists bring in welcome cash, but a traditional way of life is changing forever, and it's not always an easy process. It seemed like the perfect place for a mystery series. Rachel has grown up with the traditional values of a rural community, but she has the intelligence and experience to see a wider world than that of the family orchard and strictly local concerns. Consequently, she finds herself in the center of the sometimes turbulent and occasionally deadly events in Blossom. Devil's Trumpet, and the subsequent books in the series, Deadly Nightshade, and Bleeding Heart, have given me a wonderful opportunity to combine my love of gardening and landscaping, my delight with the mystery genre, and my interest in contemporary Northwest issues. It has also been a great excuse to try out some of Rachel's garden designs on my two and a half acres of garden and woodland. I've had a lot of pleasure in writing this series, and I hope you have as much pleasure reading it!
