Design is not what you deliver. It is how decisions get made.
Most designers working inside large institutions already know this — not as a principle, but as a feeling. The feeling that the work arrived too late. That the brief described one project and the files contained another. That something important was decided before the design team was ever in the room.
This book is about that gap. And about what becomes possible when you close it.
Vlad Herrera spent years designing for institutions where the work was never abstract — the World Bank, the Pan American Health Organization, the Inter-American Development Bank. Real projects, real pressure, real audiences spanning languages, cultures, and entirely different ways of understanding the same information. What those years taught him was not a better design process. It was a different way of seeing where design belongs in the process — earlier, deeper, and responsible for more than the final deliverable.
With AI, that shift is no longer theoretical. Complexity that used to surface mid-project — when the budget was committed and the timeline was fixed — can now be surfaced at the start, where understanding is still cheap and course correction is still possible. That changes what designers can be accountable for. And it changes what institutions, communicators, and systems builders can produce.
Designing for Global Impact covers the full terrain of that shift: designing across cultures and languages, optimizing for real-world usability, navigating the legal and ethical weight of systems that influence decisions at scale, and building tools that continue to serve people long after the deliverable is done. Every chapter comes from real work. Real constraints. Real files sent the night before a deadline by someone who believed they were giving you everything you needed.
This book is for the designer who has outgrown the brief. For the communicator inside a complex institution who senses there is a smarter way to work. For anyone building platforms, tools, or systems meant to reach people across borders, languages, and conditions they cannot fully anticipate. And for anyone who has ever suspected that the real problem was never the one in the brief.
The tools have changed. The responsibility has expanded. The work — at its core — remains what it has always been. It is about people. It has always been about people.
What you will find inside:
How international organizations communicate — and where the model breaks. The design principles that hold under real-world pressure across cultures and languages. What AI changes about when complexity becomes visible. The legal and ethical obligations that come with systems that influence decisions at scale. Case studies from the World Bank, PAHO, and the IDB — what worked, what did not, and what would be done differently today. A framework for moving from outputs to systems, from static to adaptive, from delivering design to using it as a tool for better decisions.
