A Descriptive Catalogue of the Marine Collection to be found at India House, New York, 1935. This book was designed and published in an edition of one thousand copies by Melville E. Stone, at the Sign of the Gosden Head, New York, in the month of November 1935, for the Board of Governors of India House and was printed under the direction of John S. Fass at the Harbor Press. This book is number in red ink 858. At the Sign of the Gosden Head was a print publishing company that produced popular sporting prints including equestrian, hunting, and marine subjects. The Harbor Press was a distinguished high-end printer of private press books. James A. Farrell was the president of United States Steel Corporation and under his leadership it became America's first billion-dollar company. Farrell was also a champion and early pioneer of export markets, who massively expanded US steel exports to the world with the help of the shipping subsidiary he founded, the Isthmian Steamship Company. From the Birth of India House - In 1914, he invited thirty-eight men who represented leading manufacturers, banks, and shipping firms to dinner at the Metropolitan Club. After dinner, Mr. Farrell announced the formation of a new club downtown to be called India House. The chosen site was the old Cotton Exchange building in Hanover Square. The purpose of the Club was to bring together all the elements in foreign trade so that they would know each other better and would work together more intimately than in the past. The Club was also to furnish offices and headquarters for the National Foreign Trade Council. The Board was then and there constituted, and it is believed that nearly every one of those men has remained a governor of India House to this day 1935 excepting those who have passed away. A Mr. Straight presented to the club his collection of marine prints and also a collection of ship models which he purchased for that particular purpose. From time-to-time members of the Club have made handsome contributions to our collection of unique objects of art all connected with the sea-going interests of the institution. This folio format book, 137 pages is in fine condition. There is very minor rubbing at the bottom of the spine, not enough to downgrade the wonderful state of this very scarce, very high-end volume. There is a pencil gift inscription in the front of the book, dated 1967. Top-edge-gilt and deckled pages. There are 34 plates, each with a tissue guard, and one is a fold-out illustration. We specialize in literature, history and travel and illustrated books. Our large selection of modern first editions are virtually all in fine condition in fine mylar protected dust jackets.
At present, we have a sizeable horror cinema and literature selection including early first edition of works by King, Koontz, Martin and Gaiman.
We have only put up a fraction of our inventory listed on our online store. The entire balance of our books for sale can only be accessed by visiting us in Hackett’s Cove or by making an inquiry related to specific items of interest.

Right of withdrawal
If you are a consumer you can withdraw from the contract in accordance with the following. Consumer means any natural person who is acting for purposes which are outside his trade, business, craft or profession.
Information regarding the right of withdrawal
Statutory right to withdraw
You have the right to withdraw from this contract within 14 days without giving any reason.
The withdrawal period will expire after 14 days from the day on which you acquire, or a third party other than the carrier and indicated by you acquires, physical possession of the last good or the last lot or piece.
To exercise the right of withdrawal, electronically fill in and submit a clear statement on our website, under "My Purchases" in "My Account". We will communicate to you an acknowledgement of receipt of such a withdrawal on a durable medium (e.g. by e-mail) without delay.
To meet the withdrawal deadline, it is sufficient for you to send your communication concerning your exercise of the right of withdrawal before the withdrawal period has expired.
Effects of withdrawal
If you withdraw from this contract, we will reimburse to you all payments received from you, including the costs of delivery (except for the supplementary costs arising if you chose a type of delivery other than the least expensive type of standard delivery offered by us).
We may make a deduction from the reimbursement for loss in value of any goods supplied, if the loss is the result of unnecessary handling by you.
We will make the reimbursement without undue delay, and not later than 14 days after the day on which we are informed about your decision to withdraw from this contract.
We will make the reimbursement using the same means of payment as you used for the initial transaction, unless you have expressly agreed otherwise; in any event, you will not incur any fees as a result of such reimbursement.
We may withhold reimbursement until we have received the goods back, or you have supplied evidence of having sent back the goods, whichever is the earliest.
You shall send back the goods or hand them over to Raven & Gryphon Fine Books, Tantallon, Nova Scotia, Canada, +1 902-488-6291, without undue delay and in any event not later than 14 days from the day on which you communicate your withdrawal from this contract to us. The deadline is met if you send back the goods before the period of 14 days has expired. You will have to bear the direct cost of returning the goods. You are only liable for any diminished value of the goods resulting from the handling other than what is necessary to establish the nature, characteristics and functioning of the goods.
Exceptions to the right of withdrawal
The right of withdrawal does not apply to:
- The delivery of newspapers, journals or magazines with the exception of subscription contracts; and
- The supply of digital content which is not supplied on a tangible medium (e.g. on a CD or DVD) if you accepted when you placed your order that we could start to deliver it, and that you could not withdraw once delivery had started.
Shipping terms
Orders usually ship within 2 business days. Shipping costs are based on books weighing up to 2.2 LB, or 1 KG. If your book order is heavy or oversized, we may contact you to let you know extra shipping is required.
