Ganong, together with a reprint of the original French edition of 1672, Limited to 520 copies. "One of the most valuable accounts of Acadia produced in the seventeenth century" (George MacBeath, DCB), written by a leading early figure in the country. A merchant at La Rochelle, the author was commissioned by the Compagnie de la Nouvelle France to recruit settlers and furnish supplies for the expedition under Isaac de Razilly which was sent to resettle Acadia after its restoration to France by the Treaty of Saint-Germain-en-Laye in 1632. He spent the major part of the next forty years of his life attempting unsuccessfully to establish a colony and a viable fishing and trading enterprise in Acadia. In 1753 he purchased the rights to the coast and islands of the Gulf of St. Lawrence from Cape Canso to Cape Rosier at the mouth of the Penobscot Bay (including Cape Breton, the Madeleine Islands and Prince Edward Island); shortly afterwards he was appointed governor and lieutenant-general of the territory by the French King. As a result of his failure to settle his lands, however, his seigneury began to be broken up in the 1660's. Financially ruined, he lived his last years at Nipisiguit (Bathurst, N.B.), where he wrote the present account. TPL 67. DCB I pp. 256-59.…
