Item description from seller

An Early Account of The English Close Rolls Hardy, Sir Thomas Duffus [1804-1878]. A Description of the Close Rolls in the Tower of London; With an Account of the Early Courts of Law and Equity. [London]: Printed for Private Circulation, 1833. xii, 191 pp. Octavo (8-3/4" x 5-1/4"). Later quarter vellum over cloth, gilt title and publication date to spine, untrimmed edges, endpapers renewed. Spine ends lightly bumped, minor wear to corners, lower corners lightly bumped, later owner bookplate of John Fines to front pastedown, "To Peter Hardy Esqr/ From his affectionate Brother/ the author," a note in another hand, "Bought from / Sage/ December 1879./ W.H," a part-erased price, "3/6," and faint offsetting from a bookplate to half-title, first three leaves following title page partially detached but secure. A handsome copy with associations. $350. * Only edition. The close rolls record rights granted to individuals and groups by the English Crown during the early 13th century. Sir Thomas Hardy trained as an archivist when he was a clerk at the Record Office at the Tower of London and ended his career as the deputy keeper of the Public Record Office. A prolific scholar and a talented paleographer, he edited several volumes for the Record Commission. Peter Hardy [1813-1863], one of his three younger brothers, was a London lawyer. "W.H." may be another younger brother, Sir William Hardy [1807-1887], who was, like Thomas, a distinguised archivist of early English records. The later bookplate is likely that of the distinguished English medieval and ecclesiastical historian John Fines [1938-1999]. Sage is extremely likely to be the prominent Victorian-Era bookseller and printer C.J. Sage, i.e. Charles James Sage (1841-1908), of Frome, England.
