First editions, Octavo text, 1,159 pp. plus 45 text figures (sketch maps), 1 color plate, and octavo portfolio atlas containing 52 (of 53) unbound, large, and beautifully colored, folding soil maps of important agricultural counties, areas, and municipalities in various states (see below). Text and atlas in original maroon cloth with gold spine titles. *** Condition: Complete with all maps except map 24 Tama County, Iowa. Both volumes are very clean with no stamps or markings. Minor rubbing to covers and light wear to edges and corners. Atlas volume string ties broken. All pages, plates, and atlas maps are very clean. One map has a verso stain that shows through to recto. *** An extensive, well-illustrated treatment of soil type and distribution, land-use, agricultural conditions, farming practices, climate, physiology and geology, etc. for selected prominent localities; these volumes form part of the first graphic and systematic study of our nation's greatest natural asset. In addition to showing soil types and distribution, the maps also show cities and towns, roads, railroads, and other cultural features, plus hydrography and topography, all as they existed almost 100 years ago. Each report contains information about the history of settlement and agricultural development, farming practices, crops, land prices (incredibly low!), etc. Includes counties and areas of the following States: Rhode Island (Providence and Newport); Vermont (Vergennes); New York (Auburn); Pennsylvania (Adams); Virginia (Appomattox); South Carolina (Lancaster, Orangeburg, Charleston); Georgia (Dodge, Bainbridge, Macon); Tennessee (Lawrence, Greenville); Kentucky (Warren); Florida (Gainesville); Alabama (Sumter); Louisiana (De Soto Parish); Mississippi (Jackson, Biloxi); Ohio (Wooster, Coshocton); Michigan (Munising, Alma, Saginaw, Owosso); Indiana (Marshall, Scott, Boonville); Wisconsin (Superior); Missouri (Saline, Webster, O'Fallon); Nebraska (Kearney); Kansas (Allen, Garden City); North Dakota (Cando); Colorado (Greeley); Utah (Bear River); Texas (Anderson, Austin, San Antonio); Arizona (Yuma); and California (Sacramento, San Bernardino, Bakersfield).
