About this Item
VALPY, J. A. (editor and printer) Scriptores latini in usum Delphini, cum notis variorum variis lectionibus, conspectu codicum et editionum et indicibus locupletissimus accurate recensiti. [The Latin Writings after the system of the Delphin Classics, with variorum notes, lists of manuscripts and editions, and with most ample indices carefully collated with the texts.] Londini: Curante et imprimente A. J. Valpy, A. M., 1819 - 1830. One hundred and eighty-six weighty 8vo volumes bound in earlier nineteenth-century full leather with gilt ornamental border within gilt rules to boards and gilt ruling and lettering to spine. Gilt-bordered red morocco title patches to spine. Marbled edges. Ex library but for the most part showing minimal markings internally. Very crisply printed with generous margins, and on very good quality paper. A complete set of the Delphin series of Classical and Late-Classical authors, undertaken with the editorial supervision of George Dyer, and following upon the system of the original seventeenth-century Delphin edition which was prepared during the reign of Louis XIV of France. In re-presenting the Latin Classics Abraham John Valpy (1787-1854) adopted his own critical apparatus, availing himself of the most reliable texts that had so far been put forth to his age, but taking over the latin interpretations, annotations and indices of the 17th c. Delphin volumes. He then supplemented these materials with the notes of the best Variorum editions as well as the literary notes of the late-eighteenth-century Zweibrücken (Bipontine) editions. As Valpy himself stated, 'The Delphin, Bipont, and Variorum Classics are rendered comparatively needless by this comprehensive edition, in which is incorporated, for the first time, the substance of the three; and the value of the Series is more particularly enhanced by the insertion of the Various Readings contained in all the principal editions of each Author.' Text generally good to very good; condition of bindings mixed. All but two of the volumes in this set retain their contemporary bindings, and of these a great many are still very serviceable as such. The states of the bindings of other volumes varies: as from their having partially detached spines, hinges being reinforced by use of adhesive librarian's tape, and spines in their entirety re-backed with this or similar adhesive cloth tape. Two volumes are rebound, having been in the process cropped by the binder. 20,500.00 A detailed list of titles, giving conditions of volumes, may be had on request. In brief the set comprises: Apuleius. Opera Omnia. (In Seven Volumes.) Aulus Gellius. Noctes Atticę. (In Four Volumes.) Ausonius. (D. Magni Ausonii). Opera Omnia. (In Three Volumes.) Boethius.
