First-hand defense from a military officer under fire
This nonfiction work offers a detailed account of Major General Proctor’s Montreal court-martial, presenting his side of the story as he reads the evidence and explains the choices he made under pressure. The text focuses on the charges, the retreat, and the difficult decisions faced during a volatile campaign, helping readers understand the context and the stakes of the period.
The book frames the scope of the defense and the reasoning behind each action, while remaining anchored in the events as described by Proctor. Readers will follow the sequence of moves, the challenges of coordinating troops and Indian allies, and the impact of imperfect information on judgment in the field. Through Proctor’s narration, the narrative seeks to distinguish patient analysis from controversy, offering a portrait of leadership under scrutiny.- Learn how a commander defends strategic decisions when the outcome hinges on uncertain turns of events
- See how he interprets charges about retreat, fortifications, and troop morale
- Explore how evidence is weighed and how memory shapes a historic defense
- Understand the tension between duty, honor, and the realities of war
