Neuware - Sometime this morning, you did something you cannot remember doing. You made the coffee, drove the road, reached for the phone - while your mind was somewhere else entirely. For most of your waking life, you are not choosing. You are running on a setting.Default is a book about that setting - the automatic behaviour that engineers call the default, and that turns out to be a remarkably exact word for a human life. Drawing on the science of the resting brain, the hidden machinery of habit, and the unwritten architecture of whole societies, it makes a single, unsettling case: that under stress we do not rise to the occasion, we sink to our defaults; that the sum of those defaults, hardened over years, is the thing other people call our character; and that changing them is the real, unglamorous work of changing a life. This is not another book of five easy steps. It is honest about what the science got wrong - willpower as fuel, the marshmallow test, 'ten thousand hours' - and honest about how change actually happens: slowly, upstream, and never by force. From the firing of a single neuron to the rise and fall of nations, Default shows how the same quiet machinery runs us all - and where, in the narrow margin, we are free.…
