Gimenez was born in St. Thomas in 1893 where he attended Catholic school before moving to Puerto Rico when he was 16. There, he became manager of an electrical plant, married, and had a daughter while beginning to read his poems over the radio. Although becoming a successful businessman, Gimenez liked to remain close to "the people" and was regarded as generous and friendly. His first poetry collection Virgin Islands Folklore and Other Poems was published in 1933 and was a "compilation of verse, musical compositions, and poems in the [Virgin Islands] vernacular and provides an articulate tapestry of Virgin Islands life." He then published numerous other books, composed songs, and contributed to magazines and numerous anthologies. 8vo. Brown cloth boards stamped in black to the front board, photo frontis of the author, 72 p., pink dust jacket. This copy inscribed to author Charles K. Pulse on the author's introductory page. Laid in is a small broadsheet printing Gimenez's poem, "My Virgin Isle," which is dedicated to members of the NYU workshop. Very light rubbing to cloth and dust jacket. An about near fine copy.
