One comprehensive resource to help you learn to debate in the most popular format for school- and university-level debating both in the UK and globally: British Parliamentary.
This handbook is a complete guide of everything you need to know about both the format and the skills you’ll need.
Written by a debater with over a decade of experience in speaking and coaching, it covers almost every question you could have and every problem you might face.
The guide is aimed at any and all levels of debaters. If you’ve never debated before or if you’ve debated at a competitive level but are seeking a refresher or a different view to that of your coach, this handbook should provide something useful for you.
For novices, this handbook includes explanations of the very basics of British Parliamentary, along with a glossary of common terms. For more advanced debaters, this book includes sections on more complex principles and drills to help practise them. It also includes a range of example motions of varying difficulties. There are a number of drills that you can run whether practising alone, in a team of two, or in larger groups.
You can use this handbook in one of two ways. You can read it cover to cover, and take it all in at once. Or, you can read sections as and when they are relevant to you. The book is designed so that you can do either, and you should get the same or equal benefits out of either method.
If you’ve found this book, I’ll assume that you already know something about debate and its benefits. To name but a few, it helps develop critical thinking, confidence, analytical skill, active listening (particularly in the face of an opposing view), general knowledge and teamwork.
Each of these skills is beneficial in its own right, but debating has an almost unparalleled ability to improve these holistically. These skills, the knowledge of the world encouraged by the breadth of debate topics, and your ability to be articulate even when speaking about something you know relatively little about: they will always serve you well.
Written by a debater, with fellow debaters, for debaters – what else could you need?
