Paperback. Sam is tired. Tired of the meetings, the bad coffee, the endless loop of "almost making it" in a basement community center. Life has become a mundane script he can no longer recite.Death is also tired. An ancient entity running a sprawling, fluorescent-lit afterlife office, he is bored by humanity's repetitive, uncreative exits. When God proposes a playful wager, Death seizes the chance: find one soul who won't fold, one soul who asks for a receipt.Enter Sam. When Death arrives with his Scythe, ready to finalize the loop, Sam doesn't scream. He critiques the cinematography. Across nine "reflections"-from the noble martyr on a battlefield to a chaotic train wreck and an agonizing DMV-Death curates dramatic scenarios, only for Sam to respond, again and again: "THIS WAS NOT MY DEATH."Trapped in an escalating cosmic comedy of errors, Reaper and mortal engage in a philosophical war of attrition. But as Sam deconstructs his own demise, both he and Death begin to realize the true nature of the Great Mystery. It's not an end. It's merely a door, and the exit is a blank slate. This Was Not My Death is a darkly witty, existential journey that reimagines the afterlife not as a lake of fire, but as a sprawling office with terrible lighting.
