Item description from seller

"Sales/posting to the USA suspended". Card covers, 235pp. Light wear to card edges/corners; a near fine copy. Bill McFadden enlisted in the RAAF in 1940 and was trained as a pilot at Narromine with further training at Canada on the way to Britain. In the six years he was away he wrote copious letters to his family in Queensland. This book, through his letters, reveals what he did, where he went, and how he felt about the circumstances in which he he found himself. As a RAAF student pilot, McFadden was awarded his wings in May 1941 at No. 4 Service Flying Training School, Saskatoon, Canada, under the Empire Training Scheme (EATS). Later promoted to the rank of Flight Sergeant, McFadden flew with 458 and 460 Squadrons during the Second World War. Whilst serving with No. 69 Squadron RAF, he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Medal (DFM) on 25 February 1943 for flying many operational sorties over the Mediterranean sea, including a successful torpedo attack on an enemy merchant ship in the face of heavy opposing fire from its escorting destroyer. After fulfilling several appointments in RAAF Headquarters Branches, Flight Lieutenant McFadden returned to Australia and was discharged on 18 September 1946.
