'' "Sam," she said. "Do you know a secret about monsters?" He almost laughed - a thin, exhausted breath of a laugh. The question was far too young for him; he was seventeen, he'd survived a thing most grown men couldn't imagine. But his mother's face was so soft and so certain that he played along, the way you let yourself be small for the one person who's allowed to make you small.

"What secret," he murmured. "When a child is near his parents," Catherine said, "the monsters run away. They can't stand it. It's the oldest rule there is. ''

A whispered wish. A locked door. A secret twelve years in the dark.

When seven-year-old Wren is asked to write down one wish in her composition class, the room fills with giggles - sharks, puppies, candy. But when the quietest girl in the class finally speaks, her small voice silences everyone:

"I wish that God would save my brother."

Her teacher almost doesn't catch it. Almost. What he hears instead changes everything - a brother no one has seen in weeks, crying behind a bolted door, a father who calls him sick but visits him in fury every single night.

Detective Sarah Okafor has spent fifteen years learning that the most ordinary houses hide the darkest rooms. As she pulls the thread, the truth unravels into something no one expected: the boy behind the door isn't who his records say he is. He has no past before the age of five. And four hundred miles away, a family has spent twelve years screaming his real name into the dark.

For readers of Room by Emma Donoghue, The Lovely Bones, and A Little Life, this is a story that will break your heart - and then, slowly, beautifully, put it back together.

Some wishes are too quiet to hear. Unless you lean in close.
