Item description from seller

To front: title pages, introduction by John Cournos, & author's preface. "Dead Souls," by Nikolai Gogol, tells the story of Pavel Ivanovich Chichikov, a seemingly respectable man who arrives in a Russian town and devises a scheme to acquire wealth by purchasing the "dead souls" of deceased serfs from landowners. These serfs, though deceased, are still officially registered as living, allowing Chichikov to exploit a loophole in the Russian system for his own benefit. The novel satirizes the corruption and moral decay of Russian society, particularly among the landowners and officials Chichikov encounters. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. xii + 324. Previous owner's small name label inside front cover. All edges blue. Gilt titles & decoration spine. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 500 grams. Category: Fiction; Russian Literature; Novels; Classics; Russia; 19th century; Literature & Literary. Inventory No: 5319. Hardcover (Original Green Cloth).
