What happened on October 29?
Most people know October 29 as the date of the 1929 stock market crash that helped trigger the Great Depression. Yet across the centuries, this single day has witnessed political revolutions, scientific breakthroughs, cultural milestones, humanitarian achievements, natural disasters, and moments that changed the course of history.
In On This Day: October 29, author Michael A. Monaco takes readers on a journey through time, exploring the stories behind some of the most significant events ever associated with this remarkable date. From the collapse of financial markets on Black Tuesday to the birth of modern Turkey, from the first message sent across the early internet to John Glenn’s historic return to space, each chapter reveals how October 29 has repeatedly served as a stage for events that shaped the modern world.
Inside, you’ll discover:
• The panic and uncertainty of Black Tuesday and the beginning of the Great Depression
• The international tensions surrounding the Suez Crisis
• The devastation of Hurricane Sandy and the lessons it left behind
• The tragedy of Lion Air Flight 610 and its global consequences
• The creation of modern Turkey under Mustafa Kemal Atatürk
• The humanitarian legacy of the Red Cross
• The formation of Tanzania and the challenges of nation-building
• Europe’s ambitious attempt at political unity
• The first message transmitted across ARPANET, the precursor to today’s internet
• The invention that transformed writing around the world
• John Glenn’s remarkable return to space at age seventy-seven
• The execution of Sir Walter Raleigh
• The premiere of Mozart’s Don Giovanni
• Additional notable events, people, and milestones connected to October 29
More than a collection of facts and dates, this book places historical events within the world in which they occurred. Readers will encounter not only the headlines, but also the everyday lives of the people who lived through these moments. Through detailed narratives, historical context, photographs, appendices, and carefully researched sources, On This Day: October 29 brings the past to life in an engaging and accessible way.
Whether you are a history enthusiast, a lifelong learner, or simply curious about the hidden stories behind a single date on the calendar, this book offers a fascinating look at how one day has connected people, nations, and events across more than four centuries.
History happens every day.
This is the story of October 29.
