Bibliographic Details

Title: Daughter of the Tejas.

Publisher: New York Graphic Society, Greenwich

Publication Date: 1965

Edition: First Printing of the First Edition.

A Fine copy in a Fine, unclipped 2nd issue (white) dust jacket. This novel was ghost written by McMurtry. Tiwana was a 12-year-old member of the Tejas, a tribe of Caddo Indians in Texas, but in spirit she seems closer to the members of the Mission San Jose where she was sent for instruction. Prior to her departure, Tiwana's home was attacked by a band of Apaches and her mother kidnapped. The tribe had been previously weakened by disease, and, on the whole, the members were more concerned with the lack of sustenance than with the loss of a single woman. But Tiwana was determined to save her mother. This Indian story is of interest to girls for its picture of the activities of the women within the tribe. It also presents an unusual sidelight on the influence of the missions on the Southwestern Indians. Bookseller Inventory # 25415
