You understand computers. But when conversations turn to UPS systems, PDUs, cooling paths, rack density, storage networks, redundancy, or why one failed component can take an application offline, the physical side of computing can suddenly feel like a different profession.
Data Center Infrastructure for Beginners is written to close that gap.
Instead of burying you under engineering jargon, this book shows you how a data center works as one connected system—from the rack and power path to cooling, servers, storage, networking, reliability, recovery, cloud, and AI infrastructure.
You will learn why each component exists, what it connects to, what happens when it fails, and how infrastructure teams think about capacity, resilience, and growth.
Through clear explanations, worked examples, diagrams, and failure scenarios, you will learn how to:
-
Trace power from the facility supply through UPS systems, distribution, rack PDUs, and server power supplies, while understanding volts, amps, watts, kW, kWh, kVA, power factor, A/B feeds, and power budgets.
-
Follow heat from servers through airflow, hot and cold aisles, recirculation, chilled-water and direct-expansion cooling, rack density, and liquid cooling.
-
Understand CPUs, memory, storage, network interfaces, accelerators, physical servers, virtual machines, and containers.
-
Work with block, file, and object storage, including IOPS, throughput, RAID, replication, backups, retention, RPO, RTO, and restore planning.
-
Read basic network diagrams and understand switches, routers, firewalls, load balancers, IP addresses, subnets, gateways, DNS, VLANs, bandwidth, latency, segmentation, and redundant connections.
-
Understand N, N+1, and 2N designs, shared dependencies, single points of failure, failover, planned maintenance, monitoring, rollback, and incident response.
-
Evaluate expansion by checking rack space, power, cooling, compute, storage, and networking together instead of assuming one resource tells the whole story.
-
Understand how cloud regions, availability zones, shared infrastructure, and service responsibilities still depend on physical data centers.
-
See why AI workloads can create different demands on accelerators, memory, storage throughput, networking, electrical power, and cooling.
The mathematics is kept approachable, with calculations shown step by step. Technical terms are defined when they first appear, and each chapter builds on what came before, so you are never expected to understand advanced infrastructure language before it has been taught.
By the final chapter, you will bring the pieces together into a practical infrastructure review: a labeled system diagram, capacity assumptions, likely constraints, failure points, recovery expectations, and the questions that should be answered before a design is approved.
This book is especially useful for students, junior IT professionals, cloud engineers, systems administrators, project or procurement professionals, career changers, and anyone entering data-center work without a facilities background.
You do not need an electrical engineering degree or prior data-center experience. You need a clear mental model of what is happening behind the rack doors—and the confidence to ask the right questions when something does not add up.
If terms such as UPS, PDU, SAN, hot aisle, N+1, failover, RPO, or rack density have ever made a technical discussion harder to follow, this book was written to make those conversations finally make sense.

The withdrawal period will expire after 14 days from the day on which you acquire, or a third party other than the carrier and indicated by you acquires, physical possession of the last good or the last lot or piece.
To exercise the right of withdrawal, electronically fill in and submit a clear statement on our website, under "My Purchases" in "My Account". We will communicate to you an acknowledgement of receipt of such a withdrawal on a durable medium (e.g. by e-mail) without delay.
To meet the withdrawal deadline, it is sufficient for you to send your communication concerning your exercise of the right of withdrawal before the withdrawal period has expired.
Effects of withdrawal
If you withdraw from this contract, we will reimburse to you all payments received from you, including the costs of delivery (except for the supplementary costs arising if you chose a type of delivery other than the least expensive type of standard delivery offered by us).
We may make a deduction from the reimbursement for loss in value of any goods supplied, if the loss is the result of unnecessary handling by you.
We will make the reimbursement without undue delay, and not later than 14 days after the day on which we are informed about your decision to withdraw from this contract.
We will make the reimbursement using the same means of payment as you used for the initial transaction, unless you have expressly agreed otherwise; in any event, you will not incur any fees as a result of such reimbursement.
We may withhold reimbursement until we have received the goods back, or you have supplied evidence of having sent back the goods, whichever is the earliest.
You shall send back the goods or hand them over to California Books, Fort Wayne, Indiana, U.S.A., without undue delay and in any event not later than 14 days from the day on which you communicate your withdrawal from this contract to us. The deadline is met if you send back the goods before the period of 14 days has expired. You will have to bear the direct cost of returning the goods. You are only liable for any diminished value of the goods resulting from the handling other than what is necessary to establish the nature, characteristics and functioning of the goods.
Exceptions to the right of withdrawal
The right of withdrawal does not apply to:
- The delivery of newspapers, journals or magazines with the exception of subscription contracts; and
- The supply of digital content which is not supplied on a tangible medium (e.g. on a CD or DVD) if you accepted when you placed your order that we could start to deliver it, and that you could not withdraw once delivery had started.
