With the realm in turmoil, Dark and the Nightlings set out to find more creatures of the Old World that may be hiding in the darkest corners of the forests and swamps. But the humans have re-enacted the Hundred-Year Hunt, and bands of Cleaners roam the countryside with an array of deadly traps and weapons designed by one of the Nightlings' own. After rescuing a strange creature called a vildravn from a group of the hunters, Dark is caught and finds himself in the hands of the Good Doctor where he will learn the true meaning of fear. When she reveals to the vildravn that Dark has fae blood, the creature seizes on a chance for absolution, helps Dark escape, and convinces him to go to Troha and claim that which all the barons so desperately crave: the crown. Fate has other plans though, and the paths of others will be woven into his.
