Synopsis:

"Dare To Dream - Flying Solo With Diabetes" chronicles Douglas Cairns' experience as the first pilot with type 1 diabetes to fly around the world in a light aircraft. Douglas Cairns is a man who won't take no for an answer. A man who enjoys life, lving it to the fullest - and at top speed, if he can have it his way. From ski racing to fast jets in the British Royal Air Force, he was living his dream, and then a diagnosis of diabetes put an end to it. With characteristic enthusiasm, he learned to control diabetes, but he never stopped dreaming about flying...and making diabetes part of the equation. Flying around the world is one of those dreams that only a very few people carry out - and no one with type 1 diabetes has ever done it, until now. Douglas Cairns has set a new world record and he'll make you see the world - and the people in it - in a whole new way. "Dare To Dream" is an impassioned adventure story - a survival challenge of worldwide proportions.

About the Author: Douglas Cairns, was a British Royal Air Force jet pilot when in 1989, at the age of 25, he was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. His flying career forcibly finished, he changed career to finance, moving to London in 1989 and then to Thailand in 1996 to help establish a joint venture fund management company for a British company. During Douglas' new career, the passion for flying never left, and in 1999 he discovered that the USA had introduced a scheme that can allow people with type 1 diabetes to fly on a full private pilot license. After gaining his license in 2000, he embarked upon a record-breaking round-the-world flight in 2002, dubbed "Diabetes World Flight." Douglas piloted a beech Baron B58 twin-engine aircraft through 22 countries over 159 Days, experiencing nail-biting weather conditions over the North Atlantic and the tropics, and meeting with members of the diabetes community in many different parts of the world.
