ويسرد الكاتب على امتداد 400 صفحة رؤيته للحرب على مصير فلسطين في نهايات الانتداب عبر استعادة سيرة القائد عبد القادر الحسيني، والإضاءة على محطات مفصلية في حياته، وتفاصيل حراكاته الداخلية والعربية المكثفة في نيسان العام 1948، مركزاً على معركة القسطل كمحطة حاسمة في مسار الحرب.
وينوه المؤلف بأنه كُتبت بشأن معارك القدس بوجه عام، وبشأن معركة القسطل بوجه خاص، عشرات بل مئات الكتب والمقالات والأبحاث، التي استخدمت - في غالبيتها الساحقة - مصادر إسرائيلية وأجنبية، بينما القليل منها فقط استند إلى مصادر عربية. ويعود ذلك، برأيه، إلى سبب بسيط جداً، هو أنه لا يتوفر الكثير من مثل هذه المصادر، وحتى إن توفرت توثيقات عن تلك الحقبة، فمن الصعب، أو المستحيل تماماً الوصول إليها في حالات كثيرة.. كذلك لدى الفلسطينيين أيضاً، فإن الأرشيفات المتوفرة قليلة جداً وغير منظمة. وثمة مشكلات أخرى، في مقدمتها عدم معرفة العديد من الباحثين، الإسرائيليين والأجانب، اللغة العربية، ناهيك عن الاستخفاف الظاهر، في كثير من الأحيان، بموثوقية الوثائق العربية وصدقيتها من منطلقات شتى. وهو استخفاف راسخ لدى جلّ الباحثين الإسرائيليين لدوافع مسبقة البرمجة والأدلجة.
بعد هذا التنويه، يؤكد المؤلف أنه في كتابه هذا سعى للاستئناس أولاً وقبل أي شيء بالمصادر العربية، بما في ذلك مصادر عائلية بقيت خارج دائرة الاستخدام، تماماً تقريباً، طوال أعوام عديدة. وأوضح أن ما حثّه على الاستناد إلى تلك المصادر هو طريقة العمل التي اعتمدها د. شريف كناعنة، من مواليد عرابة البطوف في الجليل، وأستاذ العلوم الإنسانية الذي كان يدرّس في جامعة بيرزيت، ودرَس ودرَّس في الولايات المتحدة لسنوات عديدة، وأثارت إعجابه، فقرّر أن يستخدمها في بحثه عن مصادر تكشف له ملابسات معركة القسطل، على ما تحفل به من أهمية بعيدة المدى.
ويتميز الكتاب الذي يستعير عنوانه من جملة أطلقها الحسيني، بقيام المؤلف بإعادة التذكير أن العام 1948 هو عام مصيريّ للغاية في تاريخ قضية فلسطين برمتها، كونه العام الذي "استطاع فيه الييشوف اليهودي تأسيس دولة"، بينما "حلّ بالفلسطينيين، في المقابل، دمار وطني شامل، وشخصي أيضاً في كثير من الحالات". وهو يفعل ذلك بالأساس بوساطة التركيز على القدس ومعركة القسطل من خلال أحد أهم رموزهما في تاريخ النكبة الفلسطينية، معتبراً أنه بنظرة إلى الوراء يمكن الجزم بأن اليوم الحاسم في معركة القسطل ومقتل الحسيني هما عصارة قصة سقوط القدس العربية، وربما بمثابة جوهر قصة النكبة الفلسطينية كلها، وأن الأحداث التاريخية أثبتت ما قاله رؤساء الجمهورين اليهودي والعربي معاً حيال مسألة السيطرة على القدس في العام 1948، وفحواه أن من يسيطر على القدس يسيطر على البلد (فلسطين) كله.
ويشير الكاتب مستنداً إلى الخلاصات، التي توصل إليها من الإحداثيات التي قدّم تحليلاً لها، إلى أن جميع الذين كتبوا عن الأحداث الجسيمة التي وقعت في 1948 يعتبرون معركة القسطل نقطة تحوّل رمزية ودراماتيكية في المعارك التي اندلعت في البلد عشية انتهاء الانتداب البريطاني يوم 15 أيار من ذلك العام. ففي اليوم الذي جرت فيه معركة القسطل (7/8 نيسان 1948) وقع حدثان آخران: مذبحة دير ياسين ومعركة مشمار هعيمق. ويعرب عن اعتقاده بأن هذين الحدثين حسما مصير الحرب، حتى قبل أن تدخل الجيوش العربية إلى ساحة القتال، بعد ذلك بوقت قصير.

Right of withdrawal
If you are a consumer you can withdraw from the contract in accordance with the following. Consumer means any natural person who is acting for purposes which are outside his trade, business, craft or profession.

Statutory right to withdraw
You have the right to withdraw from this contract within 14 days without giving any reason.
The withdrawal period will expire after 14 days from the day on which you acquire, or a third party other than the carrier and indicated by you acquires, physical possession of the last good or the last lot or piece.
To exercise the right of withdrawal, electronically fill in and submit a clear statement on our website, under "My Purchases" in "My Account". We will communicate to you an acknowledgement of receipt of such a withdrawal on a durable medium (e.g. by e-mail) without delay.
To meet the withdrawal deadline, it is sufficient for you to send your communication concerning your exercise of the right of withdrawal before the withdrawal period has expired.
Effects of withdrawal
If you withdraw from this contract, we will reimburse to you all payments received from you, including the costs of delivery (except for the supplementary costs arising if you chose a type of delivery other than the least expensive type of standard delivery offered by us).
We may make a deduction from the reimbursement for loss in value of any goods supplied, if the loss is the result of unnecessary handling by you.
We will make the reimbursement without undue delay, and not later than 14 days after the day on which we are informed about your decision to withdraw from this contract.
We will make the reimbursement using the same means of payment as you used for the initial transaction, unless you have expressly agreed otherwise; in any event, you will not incur any fees as a result of such reimbursement.
We may withhold reimbursement until we have received the goods back, or you have supplied evidence of having sent back the goods, whichever is the earliest.
You shall send back the goods or hand them over to WorldofBooks, Coventry, WMD, United Kingdom, without undue delay and in any event not later than 14 days from the day on which you communicate your withdrawal from this contract to us. The deadline is met if you send back the goods before the period of 14 days has expired. You will have to bear the direct cost of returning the goods. You are only liable for any diminished value of the goods resulting from the handling other than what is necessary to establish the nature, characteristics and functioning of the goods.
Exceptions to the right of withdrawal
The right of withdrawal does not apply to:
- The delivery of newspapers, journals or magazines with the exception of subscription contracts; and
- The supply of digital content which is not supplied on a tangible medium (e.g. on a CD or DVD) if you accepted when you placed your order that we could start to deliver it, and that you could not withdraw once delivery had started.
