Print on Demand. This book investigates the devastating effects of a spruce budworm infestation on balsam fir trees. The author analyzes the build-up of damage, studying mortality rates and the impact on tree growth. Drawing on detailed observations and data collected over several years, the book provides insights into the complex relationship between insect outbreaks and forest health. The research presented here helps foresters and landowners understand the long-term consequences of insect infestations and develop strategies for managing and protecting their forests from similar threats in the future. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.

There is a lag between the initial defoliation of a fir tree and the first reduction in diameter growth. Another lag of at least 3 years occurs between the time of crown recovery after the epidemic, and a response to this recovery in terms of diameter growth. These lags are thought to be related to continued photosynthesis in the old needles.
