There are fantasy novels where a magical dagger glows heroically whenever evil is nearby. Then there is Dagger Magic , where possessing enchanted objects, ancient powers and complicated destinies proves to be rather less convenient than the recruitment brochures would have you believe. Katherine Kurtz and Deborah Turner Harris once again demonstrate that saving the world is rarely as straightforward as waving something pointy in the general direction of the problem. Set in the richly imagined world of the Adept series, the novel follows characters caught in an intricate web of ancient prophecies, dangerous magic and political intrigue. Old enemies refuse to stay defeated, powerful artefacts begin attracting exactly the sort of attention their owners would rather avoid, and the delicate balance between light and darkness starts wobbling alarmingly. As fantasy careers go, it is considerably more demanding than the average village blacksmith. The irony is delightfully familiar. Most people dream of discovering they possess hidden magical abilities. Few stop to consider that extraordinary power generally arrives accompanied by impossible responsibilities, mysterious enemies, sleepless nights and the occasional prophecy insisting that only you can prevent civilisation from collapsing before teatime. Suddenly, an ordinary office job begins to look rather appealing. Kurtz has long been celebrated for creating intelligent fantasy worlds where politics, religion and history matter just as much as magic, while Deborah Turner Harris brings a sharp sense of pace and atmosphere to the collaboration. Together they produce a story that feels both epic and deeply personal, balancing grand supernatural conflicts with characters whose fears, loyalties and ambitions remain entirely recognisable. What makes Dagger Magic particularly enjoyable is that magic is never treated as an effortless solution. Every spell carries consequences, every decision echoes through the wider world, and every victory seems to demand a price somewhere else. It gives the novel a welcome sense of weight, reminding readers that genuine power is often measured by restraint rather than spectacle. The world itself feels wonderfully lived-in. Ancient traditions, secret societies, forgotten histories and simmering rivalries create the impression that events have been unfolding for centuries before the opening chapter. Readers are invited into a setting with genuine depth, where every castle, monastery and forest seems capable of hiding another story waiting to be discovered. Published during the golden age of epic fantasy paperbacks, Dagger Magic comes from a time when sprawling magical adventures happily trusted readers to immerse themselves in richly layered worlds without needing every mystery immediately explained. It rewards patience, inviting you to savour the unfolding mythology rather than racing from battle to battle. And then there is the title. Dagger Magic sounds wonderfully direct, as though someone carefully surveyed the entire catalogue of enchanted objects and concluded that swords were unnecessarily flashy, staffs too cumbersome and magic rings destined to cause copyright issues. A dagger, on the other hand, is compact, practical and far easier to conceal until destiny unexpectedly calls. This Good condition copy, offered by Crappy Old Books , has clearly completed a few quests of its own but remains perfectly equipped for another adventure. It bears the honest signs of a well-read fantasy paperback while retaining plenty of life in its pages. No enchanted blades are tucked inside, no ancient curses have been detected between the chapters, and thankfully the only oath required is promising yourself "just one more chapter"?a promise this book will cheerfully encourage you to break.…
