Buff self-wraps, stitched (some signatures loose). 14 cm. 36 pp. A promotional for Dr. Green's vegetable preparation, along with numerous testimonials, the latest dated 1881. Dr. Green, of Tilton, Whitfield County, GA., offers to cure dropsy in its various forms. A bit of damage to the margin of one leaf, affecting a few letters, some old staining. A good copy. The Atwater catalogue lists pamphlets published by Dr. H.H. Green and Sons, S-471.1, and S-471.2, but not this one. Green's treatment for dropsy was continued by his sons. The mail-order remedy involved purging the system with a product that, on close examination in the 1920s, was discovered to contain primarily "powdered squill as the chief medicinal ingredient." At least a few of the Green family "patients" died as a result of ingesting this remedy which treated an underlying symptom rather than the disease it indicated. [see: "Nostrums and Quackery: Articles on the Nostrum Evil, Quackery and Allied Matters Affecting the Public Health," (AMA: 1921), vol. 1, pp.511-13]. OCLC lists three copies: Smithsonian, Harvard Univ. Med. School, National Lib. of Medicine.…
