Item description from seller

2016 N&M Press reprint (original pub 1898). SB. 198 pp. + illustrationsPublished Price £11.50 First published by Methuen in 1896, The Downfall of Prempeh: A Diary of Life with the Native Levy in Ashanti, 1895-96 is Robert Baden-Powell's first-hand account of the British expedition into the Ashanti kingdom of West Africa. Written while he was still a serving Army officer, years before achieving international fame as the founder of the Scout movement, it provides a vivid contemporary record of campaigning in the difficult terrain of the Gold Coast.Baden-Powell served with the expedition commanded by Sir Francis Scott and was responsible for raising, organising and commanding locally recruited levies. Presented in the form of a campaign diary, his narrative records the practical realities of the advance towards Kumasi: recruiting and training troops, scouting, reconnaissance, road-building, clearing bush, organising transport and conducting marches through dense tropical country.Although the expedition encountered little organised military resistance, campaigning conditions presented formidable challenges. Disease and sickness took a severe toll, demonstrating how climate, terrain, communications and logistics could prove as dangerous as enemy action in nineteenth-century colonial warfare. The advance culminated in the occupation of Kumasi and the removal of King Prempeh from power. Baden-Powell records these events from the perspective of a British officer directly involved in the expedition, while also commenting upon local customs, personalities and the political circumstances surrounding British intervention. As such, the book must also be read as a product of its period, reflecting contemporary British imperial attitudes towards Ashanti society and colonial expansion. This perspective itself gives the work considerable historical value.Part military memoir, part campaign diary and part record of colonial soldiering, The Downfall of Prempeh is an important primary source for students of the Ashanti campaigns, Victorian imperial warfare and Baden-Powell's early military career. The book is well illustrated, and includes B-P's own highly competent sketches.…
