This selection of services, collects, epistles, gospels, psalms and prayers has been extracted from the Book of Common Prayer for use at home, 'where the Head of every Christian Family should take upon himself the office of 'Domestic Chaplain.' It therefore omits 'those portions of the Liturgy which the Priest only may pronounce' and the services are rearranged for readers of the laity. The compiler considers that this domestic provision will be useful in cases where families are unable to visit, or find space in, their local church, 'owing to the inadequacy of church accommodation in populous places, - to the distance of the church from many of the dwellings, in extensive agricultural parishes, - to the uncertainty of the weather during a great part of the year.' The second part of the book supplies short sermons by Dale for delivering every Sunday of the year at home. Thomas Dale (1797-1870), theologian, had already published several collections of poems, by the time he graduated from Corpus Christi College, Cambridge and was ordained in 1823, being regarded as a high-church evangelical. He spent the greater part of his career in his native London, running a school in Camberwell (where he taught the young John Ruskin), as a preacher and professor of English at London University. Enjoying the patronage of Sir Robert Peel, he was incumbent of several successive parishes, including St. Bride's and was a canon of St. Paul's, culminating in his appointment to the vicarage of St. Pancras, then the most populous parish in London, 1846-61. He retired to a rural living in Hertfordshire before becoming briefly Dean of Rochester in 1870. A scarce title.
