8vo. 7.5 x 5 inches. 260 pp. Bound in original dark green cloth, gilt, decorated with black block on front board. Extremities a little worn, including head and tail of spine, which is sunned. Hinges starting to crack, but otherwise a very good copy. A few pencil notations. Signed by author with initials to his friend, Robert F. Muirhead, 1886 on first free endpaper. Decorated by title page and head and tailpiece vignettes. Second enlarged edition of the long prose poem, Towards Democracy, with numerous other poems, first published in 1883. Edward Carpenter (1844-1929) was an Utopian socialist philosopher, poet, author and advocate of sexual liberation, who influenced many later writers and thinkers. From the 1870s to the early 1930s, he chose to live in the Sheffield / Derbyshire area.
