- Book 4 of 10: Lady Charlotte Wrenwood Murder Mysteries
A golden English autumn. A legendary rose garden. A locked room, a body, and a killer still seated at dinner.
Lady Charlotte Wrenwood arrives at Rosemere Manor expecting nothing more than a quiet weekend sketching heritage roses for her botanical column. What she finds instead is a houseful of uneasy guests, a host who vanishes to his locked study before the soup course is cleared — and, the following morning, a dead man in a sealed room with no visible way in and a small brass key on the floor that nobody else seems to have noticed.
The local doctor calls it heart failure. Constable Tibbs calls it straightforward. Charlotte calls it wrong.
With her sharp botanical eye, her instinct for the things people don't say, and her ginger tom Ptolemy as her decidedly opinionated companion, Charlotte begins to pull at the threads — the suspicious solicitor who arrived a day early, the fiancée nobody knew existed, the housemaid who knows too much about a house she has only worked in for eight months. Each thread leads somewhere. Not all of them lead where Charlotte expects.
Because the most elegant crime is not the one committed in anger. It is the one planned four months in advance, with patience and precision and a medieval manuscript that the victim loved most. The one designed to look, when it was over, exactly like nature taking its course.
Set against the autumnal splendour of the Wiltshire countryside — seed cake in the kitchen, rosehip jelly on the range, log fires and damp wool and the last roses of the season holding on against the October cold — Death at Rosemere Manor is a fair-play mystery with every clue on the page, a slow-burn romance that earns its warmth, and a resolution that clicks into place with the satisfying precision of a well-made lock.
For fans of charming historical cozy mysteries filled with witty sleuths, aristocratic intrigue, and clever whodunits.
A delightful 1920s cozy mystery packed with twists, secrets, and a satisfying ending.
