Data centers depend on reliable electrical infrastructure to keep servers, networking equipment, storage systems, cooling equipment, and other critical loads operating continuously. Designing and maintaining this infrastructure requires a clear understanding of power distribution, backup systems, electrical protection, grounding, monitoring, commissioning, and reliability engineering.
The Data Center Power Systems Handbook provides a practical introduction to the electrical systems that support modern data center operations. It explains how major power-system components work together and explores the engineering principles used to support availability, protect critical equipment, and maintain dependable power delivery.
Inside this handbook, you will explore:
. Fundamentals of data center electrical infrastructure
. Utility power sources and incoming electrical services
. Power distribution architectures for critical facilities
. Transformers, switchgear, switchboards, and distribution panels
. Uninterruptible power supply systems and battery backup
. Standby generators and automatic transfer switches
. Power distribution units and rack-level power delivery
. Electrical load calculations and capacity planning
. Circuit breakers, protective devices, and coordination principles
. Grounding, bonding, and electrical fault protection
. Redundant power architectures and resilience strategies
. Single-line diagrams and electrical system documentation
. Power monitoring, metering, alarms, and control systems
. Electrical commissioning, testing, and functional verification
. Preventive maintenance and critical equipment inspections
. Power quality, harmonics, and common electrical disturbances
. Failure analysis and troubleshooting of power-system problems
. Reliability planning and risk reduction for critical electrical infrastructure
. Energy efficiency and electrical loss considerations
. Operational practices for maintaining dependable power delivery
The book connects electrical engineering principles with the practical challenges of operating critical facilities. It helps readers understand how power distribution, backup equipment, protection systems, and maintenance practices contribute to the availability and reliability of data center infrastructure.
Whether you are developing your knowledge of critical power systems, working in data center operations, studying electrical engineering, or maintaining mission-critical facilities, this handbook offers a practical foundation for understanding the electrical infrastructure behind reliable data center performance.
Who Can Benefit from This Book?
. Electrical engineers and power-system professionals
. Data center engineers and technicians
. Critical-facility operations personnel
. Electrical maintenance technicians
. Commissioning engineers and specialists
. Facility managers and technical supervisors
. Power infrastructure designers
