Item description from seller

12mo, pp. xxxv, [i], 239, [1] colophon; a good copy, in contemporary half calf over marbled boards, spine gilt. Second edition, following the first (which was in two volumes), published the previous year. This is one of the earliest publications of the merchant, diplomat, politician and literary dynamo Sir John Bowring (1792-1872): his selection from the Russian poets must be the first of any such collection published in Britain, and it was followed by similar collections by him from Polish, Hungarian, Czech and other European languages to which much of the Anglophone literary world was a stranger.
