Explore Edinburgh by bike with our family activity guidebook
Imagine the joy of exploring Edinburgh with your family, pedalling through its historic streets, scenic parks, and stunning coastal paths. This guidebook, published by Sustrans in collaboration with Ordnance Survey, offers 10 routes through historical landmarks, tourist destinations, and green spaces, designed to help families spend quality time together on two wheels.
In addition to key landmarks, the guide also utilizes the city's National Cycle Network routes and disused railway lines to explore lesser-known areas, providing a unique and diverse cycling experience.
Why you’ll love it:
- 10 Family-friendly Rides: Each route is thoughtfully designed to be safe, fun, scenic, and engaging for families.
- Routes ranging from 6.1 to 14.2 miles: A diverse selection of distances to suit the time available and abilities of all riders. Some routes also offer extended sections for those looking to extend their ride.
- Routes Graded by Difficulty: Designed to accommodate all abilities, ages, and terrains, routes are rated from Easy to Hard, with 1 being the easiest and 5 being the most challenging.
- Ordnance Survey Mapping: Accurate and reliable mapping that clearly show routes to follow and points of interest.
- Detailed Planning Information for every route: We provide a detailed map, distance, track conditions, route description, photos, and things you can do along the way.
- Travel with ease using public transport: We’ve included bike hire details, tips on how to take your bike on trains, and useful rail links for individual rides.
- Family activities: Highlights include picnic spots, swimming pools, play areas, and other sites of interest. The guidebook also features game ideas and quiz questions for kids.
- Download the digital routes: Prefer to navigate with your phone? Each route comes with a QR code that you can scan to access the digital route map. If you use a bike computer, there's a link to download the GPX files.
- Accessibility information: Read up on the track conditions and barrier information for every route. We also detail road crossings and things to watch out for on the route.
