How to Master Complexity in Negotiations
By Matt R. Hering
Most negotiation books teach tactics.
This book teaches something different: how to navigate complexity.
After more than 17 years and over 650 negotiations—from the shop floor to the executive suites of some of the world's largest energy companies—Matt R. Hering came to a simple realization:
Negotiations are not linear events. They are living systems.
In an age shaped by globalization, artificial intelligence, increasing interdependence, and constant change, traditional negotiation approaches often fall short. Information moves faster than ever before, stakeholders multiply, and even the best preparation cannot eliminate uncertainty.
The Systemic Negotiator offers a new perspective.
Rather than focusing solely on persuasion techniques, psychological tactics, or scripted responses, this book introduces a practical framework based on feedback, adaptability, emotional intelligence, and systemic awareness.
Readers will learn how to:
- Design negotiations as adaptive systems rather than fixed processes.
- Recognize and correct systemic drift before it leads to failure.
- Build negotiation teams that combine alignment in purpose with diversity in perception.
- Navigate conflict without sacrificing long-term relationships.
- Distinguish between ethical influence and manipulation.
- Prepare not only for what can be anticipated, but also for what cannot.
- Transform uncertainty and complexity into strategic advantages.
Drawing inspiration from systems thinking, adaptive leadership, and modern negotiation practice, this book bridges the gap between classical negotiation theory and the realities of today's interconnected world.
Whether you work in procurement, sales, mediation, leadership, or complex stakeholder environments, this book will help you develop a more resilient, flexible, and sustainable approach to negotiation.
Because the future does not belong to those who control every variable.
It belongs to those who can sense, adapt, and lead through complexity.
"Be hard on the issue, soft on the person."
The Systemic Negotiator is not about becoming a better manipulator.
It is about becoming a better architect of human cooperation.
For readers of Chris Voss, William Ury, Michael Wheeler, and Friedmund Malik who are looking for the next evolution in negotiation thinking.
