1868 CIVIL WAR Union Officer Regulations Battle Tactics Military LAW Provenance August Kautz was a 19th-century German who immigrated to America and serviced as a Union general in the Civil War. Kautz served under both generals Bulter and Grant and was highly favored by President Lincoln. It was, however, his books of civil War customs that has given him lasting fame. He published two separate works detailing the customs of both non-commissioned soldiers as well as those of commissioned officers.
