The Curse of GaribaldiWhat if.the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies had maneuvered politically and successfully avoided being conquered by Garibaldi and forced into submission to the House of Savoy? 1852. Following British politician William Gladstone's famous letters in which he condemned the Neapolitan government as "the negation of God erected into a system of government," King Ferdinando II of the Two Sicilies, in a completely unexpected political turn, seeks Gladstone's counsel to repair relations with Britain and France. This move initiates a sweeping transformation: the Bourbon monarchy transitions toward constitutional rule, decentralizes governance, modernizes education, promotes intellectual and political freedom, and launches agrarian reform to address rural inequality. When Garibaldi's Expedition of the Thousand sails in 1860, the British and Neapolitan navies block his landing in Sicily. Empowered by newly granted rights and reforms and by having a Sicilian Queen, Sicily remains loyal to Ferdinando II and his heir, Francesco II, bringing the Risorgimento to a halt in the south. As a result, Bourbon rule endures and even flourishes well into the modern era as the Kingdom of Southern Italy. 2025. Vittoria, known to her close friends as Vicky, is the Crown Princess of the Kingdom of Southern Italy, destined to become its first queen regnant in her own right. By a strange twist of fate, she is engaged to the Crown Prince of the Kingdom of Northern Italy, the successor state of the former Kingdom of Savoy. Their marriage promises to unite the two realms and peacefully complete the Risorgimento, more than a century and a half after it first began. But not everyone welcomes the prospect of a unified Italy. Secret factions within the Catholic Church and the Sicilian bourgeoisie, fearing the loss of their influence, are willing to go to great lengths to sabotage the union. As threats loom and loyalties shift, Vittoria must rely on the most unlikely allies. Yet one question remains: will it be enough to overcome the forces determined to stop her-and finally forge a single Italian kingdom? This item is printed on demand.
