Item description from seller

The author(1882-1859) was a captain in the Bengal Engineers and artist. He was the son of the surgeon James Atkinson. Atkinson's paintings depicted colonial military life in India both in peace and action. In this edition the b/w sketches by the author of earlier editions had become 40*hand-coloured lithographed plates each protected by glassine paper. Unpaginated, 91pp. Original publishers cloth bindings. Brown cloth boards with gilt decoration to upper board and gilt lettering to spine. Gilt to all page edges. Light shelf-wear to extremities. Spine cloth sunned. Marbled endpapers. Heavy foxing to title page with only the lightest foxing to the margins close to the page edges elsewhere. Pages and text-block sound.
