A fairly light-hearted account of life in British Empire era India, with 40 textual vignettes accompanied by lithographed plates after watercolours. Atkinson also authored the slightly more serious tome The Campaign in India, charting the process leading to the siege of Delhi and its recapture, the principal events of the 1857 revolt, unsurpassed as a record of the English attitude to India at that time.
