Cultivating Excellence: Building Professional Development EcoSystems for Transformational School Leadership
What if the professional development day your teachers dread could become the engine that transforms your entire school?
Most professional development fails — not because educators don't care, but because schools keep investing in one-shot workshops, disconnected initiatives, and compliance checklists instead of building something that actually works. The research is damning: districts spend thousands of dollars per teacher on training with no measurable effect on classroom practice. Teachers know it. Leaders know it. And students pay the price.
Dr. Dwayne Dyce has spent nearly two decades building what traditional professional development is missing: living, self-sustaining EcoSystems of professional growth — coaching, mentorship, critical friends groups, and strategic implementation woven together into a coherent whole that survives budget cuts, leadership transitions, and the passage of time.
Drawing on his work as a classroom teacher, STEM coordinator, district administrator, equity programming coordinator at The Dalton School, and founder of Education Solutions International (ESI) — where he has trained approximately 20,000 educators across the United States and the Caribbean — Dyce delivers a book that is equal parts research synthesis, practical playbook, and honest field guide.
Inside, you'll find:
This is not a book of abstract theory. It is a working manual for principals, superintendents, instructional coaches, teacher leaders, and nonprofit education leaders who are tired of throwing money at professional development that doesn't move the needle — and who are ready to build something that does.
Whether you lead a single classroom or an entire school system, Cultivating Excellence gives you the architecture, the evidence, and the courage to start.
Start where you are. Use what you have. Build systematically over time.
