In addition to writing several novels, plays, essays, poems, and an autobiography, Carson McCullers (Columbus, Georgia, 1917 - New York, 1967) published twenty short stories, nine of which--considered among her finest--are featured in this selection. It includes early works such as "Sucker," "Breath from the Sky," and "Wunderkind," as well as later pieces like "A Tree. A Rock. A Cloud," "The Wanderer," and "Who Has Seen the Wind?"

Celebrated among the great Southern American writers alongside William Faulkner, Flannery O'Connor, and Truman Capote, McCullers stood out for her luminous ability to portray lonely characters searching for their place in the world, capturing the emotional intensity of their inner lives through prose that is both simple and powerful.

Carson McCullers was born in Columbus, Georgia, in 1917, and died in New York in 1967 of a heart attack at the early age of fifty. Her body of work, published entirely by Seix Barral, includes the following titles: The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter (1940; Seix Barral, 1989), which immediately became a classic of contemporary fiction; Reflections in a Golden Eye (1941; Seix Barral, 1958); The Member of the Wedding (1946; Seix Barral, 1960); The Ballad of the Sad Café (1951; Seix Barral, 1958); and Clock Without Hands (1961; Seix Barral, 1963). Her autobiography, Illumination and Night Glare (1999; Seix Barral, 2001), was published posthumously. "The Mute" and other texts (Seix Barral, 2007), published in the Únicos collection, includes the draft of "The Mute"--the original title of The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter--and essays on literature.

She is considered, alongside William Faulkner, as one of the finest representatives of Southern U.S. fiction.
