Synopsis: Book by Smith, Dave

From Library Journal: Smith's 14th book of poems, his first since 1985 ( The Roundhouse Voices: New and Selected Poems, LJ 11/1/85), is a deeply reflective, elegiac work full of the pleasurable music and seemingly effortless synaesthetic effects only an accomplished poet can sustain. Haunted by the need "to know the unavoidable/ thing, meeting its depth," Smith successfully fuses the events of a shared history with the personal. In the title poem a present sense of mortality triggers memories of the Cuban missile crisis and of his mother; "azaleas beginning to explode/ that must have been planted in that year,/ the smudged hand now earth's." Memories drawn from childhood enliven many poems, and thoughts of his children's future, when they "will wake alone/ one day" give "Loneliness" great power. The collection ends with an evocation of the Fall, "God's awful/gift of loneliness." This book is for adults in an uneasy world who care about "the helpless gifts/we give, our family face/ the darkness will rend." Smith is also the author of a collection of essays of poetry criticism, Local Assays on Contemporary American Poetry (LJ 8/85). Recommended.
