About this Item
2nd printing US edition in clean rust cloth with brown spine title and bamboo vase/bonsai tree decor on frt board. Endpapers clean, hinges fine, Library borrow slip present on rear end paper, Pocket pulled but all pages present. Spine ends bumped, tips still sharp, page block untrimmed at fore-edge. Very nice former library book. 184 pp tight and bright, very clean. Izuzu Masuda, or Susie, as she is called, is drinking Cokes with her gang, when the news of Pearl Harbor is broadcast. It seems a nightmare from which she must wake, when her doctor father smuggles the family from California to Japan to keep a promise made in the Japanese tradition. Her only solace is that her love, Ken, has meanwhile managed to declare his love, giving her a little crystal horse as token. Separated at once from father, not even understanding the language, Susie and her mother are prisoners in grandfather's old-time household. The girl must learn the tea ceremony, how to arrange flowers; a marriage is planned. They plan an escape and it is thwarted. On the marriage day, dressed in wedding finery, mother and daughter do make their way to an uncle who has himself lived in the United States. These are but a few of the adventures in the fascinating story of a Japanese-American who somehow survives through police raids and bombings, through famine and loss, to the day when, boarding a train to do a last service for her father's memory, Susie runs into Ken. Here is a knowing view of what happened to young people in many lands, though the exciting story here is typically Japanese in detail. Extensive research and personal observation have made fiction "true" in the larger sense. Seller Inventory # 47769
