Joseph Roth est n� le 2 septembre 1894 dans une famille juive � Brody en Galicie, aux confins orientaux de l'Empire austro-hongrois. Cet univers particulier o� le juda�sme hassidique cohabite avec l'humanisme allemand enseign� dans les lyc�es imp�riaux et royaux, o� se m�lent les populations polonaise, allemande, juive, ukrainienne marquera profond�ment l'�crivain et constitue le cœur de son œuvre.

En 1913 il s'inscrit � l'universit� de Vienne pour des �tudes de litt�rature allemande qu'il interrompt en 1916 pour partir sur le front comme correspondant de guerre. Ce sont l� les pr�mices d'une activit� journalistique qu'il poursuivra toute sa vie de pair avec son œuvre romanesque, d'abord dans la presse viennoise et berlinoise, puis � partir de 1923 comme correspondant de la Frankfurter Zeitung pour laquelle il s�journe en France et en Russie. Ses premiers romans "socialisants", publi�s entre 1923 et 1929, La Toile d'araign�e, La R�bellion, La Fuite sans fin, indissociables du travail de journaliste, pr�parent les œuvres les plus achev�es : Le Poids de la gr�ce, La Marche de Radetsky.

Le 30 janvier 1933, jour de la prise de pouvoir d'Hitler, Roth s'exile � Paris. La mont�e du nazisme, la folie et l'internement de sa femme Friedl, ont pour lui des cons�quences dramatiques : �branlement moral, sentiment de culpabilit�, difficult�s mat�rielles, alcoolisme qui s'apparente de plus en plus � un lent suicide. Si, dans ses œuvres romanesques, l'�crivain semble alors fuir la r�alit� et lui pr�f�rer l'id�alisation, l'utopie, le conte, dans ses �crits journalistiques, il d�nonce avec une acuit� impitoyable les m�faits du national-socialisme.

Joseph Roth meurt � Paris � l'h�pital Necker le 23 mai 1939.

Il laisse une œuvre abondante et vari�e : treize romans, huit longs r�cits, trois volumes d'essais et de reportages, un millier d'articles de journaux.

Right of withdrawal

If you are a consumer you can withdraw from the contract in accordance with the following. Consumer means any natural person who is acting for purposes which are outside his trade, business, craft or profession.

Statutory right to withdraw

You have the right to withdraw from this contract within 14 days without giving any reason.

The withdrawal period will expire after 14 days from the day on which you acquire, or a third party other than the carrier and indicated by you acquires, physical possession of the last good or the last lot or piece.

To exercise the right of withdrawal, electronically fill in and submit a clear statement on our website, under "My Purchases" in "My Account". We will communicate to you an acknowledgement of receipt of such a withdrawal on a durable medium (e.g. by e-mail) without delay.

To meet the withdrawal deadline, it is sufficient for you to send your communication concerning your exercise of the right of withdrawal before the withdrawal period has expired.

Effects of withdrawal

If you withdraw from this contract, we will reimburse to you all payments received from you, including the costs of delivery (except for the supplementary costs arising if you chose a type of delivery other than the least expensive type of standard delivery offered by us).

We may make a deduction from the reimbursement for loss in value of any goods supplied, if the loss is the result of unnecessary handling by you.

We will make the reimbursement without undue delay, and not later than 14 days after the day on which we are informed about your decision to withdraw from this contract.
