Joseph Roth est né le 2 septembre 1894 dans une famille juive à Brody en Galicie, aux confins orientaux de l'Empire austro-hongrois. Cet univers particulier où le judaïsme hassidique cohabite avec l'humanisme allemand enseigné dans les lycées impériaux et royaux, où se mêlent les populations polonaise, allemande, juive, ukrainienne marquera profondément l'écrivain et constitue le cœur de son œuvre.
En 1913 il s'inscrit à l'université de Vienne pour des études de littérature allemande qu'il interrompt en 1916 pour partir sur le front comme correspondant de guerre. Ce sont là les prémices d'une activité journalistique qu'il poursuivra toute sa vie de pair avec son œuvre romanesque, d'abord dans la presse viennoise et berlinoise, puis à partir de 1923 comme correspondant de la Frankfurter Zeitung pour laquelle il séjourne en France et en Russie. Ses premiers romans "socialisants", publiés entre 1923 et 1929, La Toile d'araignée, La Rébellion, La Fuite sans fin, indissociables du travail de journaliste, préparent les œuvres les plus achevées : Le Poids de la grâce, La Marche de Radetsky.
Le 30 janvier 1933, jour de la prise de pouvoir d'Hitler, Roth s'exile à Paris. La montée du nazisme, la folie et l'internement de sa femme Friedl, ont pour lui des conséquences dramatiques : ébranlement moral, sentiment de culpabilité, difficultés matérielles, alcoolisme qui s'apparente de plus en plus à un lent suicide. Si, dans ses œuvres romanesques, l'écrivain semble alors fuir la réalité et lui préférer l'idéalisation, l'utopie, le conte, dans ses écrits journalistiques, il dénonce avec une acuité impitoyable les méfaits du national-socialisme.
Joseph Roth meurt à Paris à l'hôpital Necker le 23 mai 1939.
Il laisse une œuvre abondante et variée : treize romans, huit longs récits, trois volumes d'essais et de reportages, un millier d'articles de journaux.

Effects of withdrawal
If you withdraw from this contract, we will reimburse to you all payments received from you, including the costs of delivery (except for the supplementary costs arising if you chose a type of delivery other than the least expensive type of standard delivery offered by us).
We may make a deduction from the reimbursement for loss in value of any goods supplied, if the loss is the result of unnecessary handling by you.
We will make the reimbursement without undue delay, and not later than 14 days after the day on which we are informed about your decision to withdraw from this contract.
We will make the reimbursement using the same means of payment as you used for the initial transaction, unless you have expressly agreed otherwise; in any event, you will not incur any fees as a result of such reimbursement.
We may withhold reimbursement until we have received the goods back, or you have supplied evidence of having sent back the goods, whichever is the earliest.
