Paperback. Consisting of twelve short stories and memoir reflections, It's Okay to Cry is a first anthology from British writer, David E. Missen. Exploring parent-child relationships and the emotional chaos inherent with such territory, Missen writes with a self-effacing wit - and at times unflinching honesty - as he takes us into the early years of his parenting journey. Through a series of memoirs, he ruminates on a most universal of human experiences: being a parent. Complimenting these real-life vignettes are a series of short fictions in both the dystopian and contemporary traditions of literature; tales of sinister underground railways & human genetic modification rub shoulders with intense character explorations: a father who can't stop dancing with his daughter; a police-officer barricading himself against the onslaught of our changing world; a woman coming to terms with a most devastating loss. Each story is emotionally charged, centred around familial relationships, and leaving us with the profound question of what it means to be a parent, and perhaps, what it means to be human.
